On Happiness & Sadness

It’s not a question of being happy or sad; it's a question of making what you think or feel happiness is last as long as possible, and that of sadness, as short as possible.
Happiness that is derived from simple things or situations lasts and stays longer than from complex ones. This is primarily due to the abundance of the simple things within our reach that can make us happy. It is our minds (when tinted with greed and steered by our ego) that make happiness a convoluted issue. We fail to realize that the more intense the feeling of happiness, the shorter will be its duration. An untrained mind doesn’t recognize that the low intensity feeling of happiness has a longer duration. Those who have undergone self-realization will appreciate the simplicity in the nature of happiness. Otherwise, it’s easy to conclude that the feeling of sadness always lasts longer than happiness because our minds are more aware of the pain and suffering related to it rather than the ecstasy related to happiness. That’s why happiness is often said to be “fleeting”. The inevitability of change and problems that are part of our daily lives add further dimensions to the incidence of our happiness and sadness. Those who are able to see, understand and accept such nature of things will take a positive stand and choose the right path. The result? They will experience a more pronounced and prolonged feeling of happiness. They’re blessed …
